Mrs. Rahima Khatun, wife of Dr. Nehal Karim passed away last night at her home in Kansas City, Missouri. Ina Lillahe Wa Inna Ilahe Rajeoon. 'To Allaah we belong and to Him is our return.' She was suffering from cancer. She is sister of Anwar Khan, Quamrul Khan and Ehsan Khan. Anwar bhai and Ehsan bhai are long time members of BAGKC. Namaj-e-janaja will be held after Juhar salat at the ISGKC mosque.

The funeral prayer is scheduled for Wednesday, Nov 2, 2011 after Duhr prayer (1:30 pm) at the Islamic Center of Greater Kansas City.

Iftaar and fundraising at ISGKC on the night of 27th Ramadan

Ramadan Mubarak! Keeping with the practice of past several years, the Bangladeshi Muslims are once again organizing an Iftaar-&-Dinner at the Islamic Society of Greater Kansas City (ISGKC Masajid at 8501 E 99th Street, Kansas City, Missouri 64134) on the night of 27th Ramadan (Liylatul Qadr), which is on Friday, August 26th. The dinner will be followed by a fundraising event to support ISGKC. Last year, we helped to collect $76K in a similar event. This year, we expect to raise significantly more money to support major ISGKC initiatives including Masajid expansion, community center kitchen modernization, funeral facility upgrade, and repayment of parking lot improvement loan. Please mark your calendar and join us on the night of Liylatul Qadr at ISGKC, insha'allah.

We are asking you for a contribution of $50 or more (by check*) towards the expenses for arranging the Iftaar-&-Dinner for 400+ attendees and the fundraising event. Additionally, please consider donating generously towards the fundraising.

Why ISGKC? ISGKC uniquely serves the community in many different ways as a central organization and deserves our full support. To name a few, ISGKC provides leadership in all Muslim affairs in this region, facilitates Eid prayers, Friday prayers, and daily prayers, provides full-service Islamic funeral services, and runs an accredited full-time Islamic school.

Let us take pride as Bangladeshi Muslims by being examples to others through active participation in the community. Ramadan is about giving; let us demonstrate that we care by giving back to our Muslim community. Volunteers will soon be contacting you to facilitate your donations. Iftaar and Taraweeh Prayers at ICK

Assalamu-alaikum and Ramadan Mubarak.

The first day of Ramadan is Monday August 1st, inshallah (as decided by www.fiqhcouncil.org and accepted by ICK and ISGKC and most other masajid in the USA)

This year Taraweeh at ICK (14750 West 143rd Street, Olathe, KS 66062) will be special because inshallah we will have two young hafiz (18 and 16) from the Plano Texas masjid who will take turn leading the taraweeh prayers at ICK. These young boys are inspiration to the young people and we had the opportunity to listen to their wonderful recitation at ICK a few weeks back along with their parents.

Iftar will be provided to the community at no cost on Fridays and Sundays.

Tents will be available if you wish to host your own iftaars at ICK.
Please join us this Ramadan at ICK for the daily prayers, Iftar and Taraweeh.

ASA and Happy New Year! As many of you may know that I have been contemplating retirement for some time, but it dragged on. Finally, I set the March 1 this year for the finale! But some great thing happened over the holiday break. You will be happy to learn as I am that I have been offered a life time career opportunity at Clorox R&D to head up The Global Laundry Product Technology as Research Fellow; it is the highest technical position in the company and this high level position also carries whole lot more responsibilities, deliverables and a few more greens (twice of my current compensation). My life long work experiences in innovative product development & commercialization; product inventions credited by some sixty patents have now paid off big time!

This top level R&D position was to be located at The Clorox Technical Center at Pleasanton, CA (Corporate Office in Oakland in the bay area of San Francisco) but I have negotiated my work location at a satellite R&D center in Atlanta with frequent trips to CA. Clorox is a huge consumer packaged products conglomerate with broad portfolio almost synonymous with chlorine bleach line of products and $6 billion sales. Very soon hopefully, I will be out of this cold climate in Kansas City and working out of Atlanta, much closer to my Greensboro, NC home and weekly commuting distance. We wil miss the freindship of fellow KC deshi. Please forgive us, pray for us and wish us good luck. This is most likely the last adventure of my professional life.

Success of Thanksgiving Project

YES YOU DID IT with 100% success. We are proud to be Bangladesi
Americans living in the greater Kansas City area and be an integral part
of the mainstream community. One more success stories in Community
Service.

Project Description:
As a part of our commitment and dedication to our community, with
cooperation and sponsorship from you, we successfully donated 27 Turkey
brown bags to Linwood YMCA. Our main focus were to those who are ‘not
so lucky families’ in greater Kansas City area during the Thanksgiving
season.

Project result:
We were able to package 27 bags almost close to 600Lbs of foods for
more than 27 families. We collect 508 dollar from 21 families and we
spend 580.43 cents.

Project outcome:
We are so thankful to you and your family for your generous donations
and help to package the brown bags for Linwood YMCA food pantry. We
heard numerous ‘thank you’ and praise from the families who were
standing in the line from 8:30 am in the morning. We promised next year
we will have 100 bags of Turkey and food bags available for families.

We really appreciate ISGC executive committee for helping us through
Harvester and for letting us use the facility to keep the food and
package the brown bags. We also extend our appreciation to the BAGKC
community for their support and generous donations. This is the
beginning of Bangladeshi American Community voluntary work, where we
open doors for future generations as role model. We are involved in
humanitarian works in our community where we live and grow. The Joy of
giving was clearly displayed on our kid’s faces who helped us package
the bags.

Please enjoy the Pictures. We promised that we will have 100 bags for
next Thanksgiving and we know our community will provide spontaneous
support and God willing, we can do make a difference.

Let's get involved your children's in our community following projects for this year 2010
BAGKC- need your help and support on these projects, so we can plan and move ahead to execute them as a BAGKC program.

Following are some projects and headups.

#1. BAGKC-ISGKC partnership to volunteer (bagging grocery) for poor family - ACTIVE
ISGKC purchase food thru Harvester to provide for about 30 poor families
Families are both muslims and non-muslims
Requires 5 volunteers for 2 hours on Saturday (noon-2pm) twice a month
We need 4 Volunteer this Saturday Oct 9th at 10am(please call Saiful bhai at 214-336-680)
Br. Russell (in-charge of graveyard) leads this effort
Can be an excellent & easy volunteering place for our youth as well as adults

#2. BAGKC Thanksgiving Brown-bag sponsorship for poor - around Thanksgiving time
ISGKC purchase Turkey and other thanksgiving ifood items thru Harvester
This is voluntary. So, it is only those who wants to participate!

We need 10 interested families for sponsorship
Cost may run between $20-$30 per family according to Br. Russell
We will be notified 2-3 weeks before Thanksgiving and may need few volunteers
Can be an excellent easy volunteering place for our youth as well as adults

#3. Winter Coat Drive for the poor families by Al-Inshirah - October-November
Al-Inshirah partnering with other inner city organization has been doing a wonderful job for last several years. Last year several others participated in this drive.
This will need few volunteers as well.

##4. Annual food drive for poor families in Kansas City by Al-Inshirah - same as #3
Al-Inshirah runs an annual food drive to replenish their food pantry
We will notify all of you when it happens. May need few volunteers.

#5. BAGKC-ICT (Islamic Center of Topeka) to support Topeka Rescue Mission - ACTIVE

Islamic center of Topeka arranging dinner for 300 plus people in Topeka Rescue Mission to help homeless,hungry,frightened and often sick from the extreme conditions.

This project needs about $1,000 and ICT is already paying 50%. Bagkc family if we can collect other 50%, we can go to the center and feed the homeless.
This is an excellent project and can be done by collecting as little as $25 per family may be some family can pay even more. Let's give this a chance.

Like past years, the Bangladeshi Community is proudly serving IFTAR/dinner at ISGKC (big Maasjid at 99th Street Missouri side) on Sunday, September 5th on the night of 27th of Ramadan (Liylatul Qadr).

Please mark your calender, bring your family and join us there in the nignt of Liylatul Qadr at ISGKC, insha'allah.

We are asking a $50 donation in check to arrange this IFTAR for 400 plus people. This donation will be collected in greater Kansas city area for the IFTAR/Dinner. We are also planning to do a fund-raising in the Masjid after dinner in support of ISGKC. We are counting on your support in this great cause.

ISGKC serves us many ways in our community and we owe it to ourselves to support ISGKC in this month of Ramadan. ISGKC provides much of the leadership in Muslim affairs in this area, facilitates Eid prayers, Friday prayers, daily prayers, funeral services, an accredited full-time Islamic school and other services to name a few.

Just a reminder to mark your calendars for the BAGKC Iftar and Dinner event on Saturday,Aug 21, from 7 to 10 pm.

Nobel Peace Prize winner Dr. Yunus speaks at Springfield, MO

Nobel Peace Prize winner Dr. Yunus will speak about “Social Business: Business to make a difference,” at the Missouri State University Spring Public Affairs Convocation Lecture at 7 p.m. March 2 at Juanita K. Hammons Hall for the Performing Arts.

Yunus is a 2009 recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom and managing director of Grameen Bank. Yunus and Grameen were jointly awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2006.

According to The Norwegian Nobel Committee, Yunus and Grameen Bank were awarded the 2006 Nobel Peace Prize “for their efforts to create economic and social development from below. Lasting peace cannot be achieved unless large population groups find ways in which to break out of poverty. Microcredit is one such means. Development from below also serves to advance democracy and human rights.”

Grameen, under Yunus’ leadership, is noted as the first bank to offer microcredit (also commonly called microloans) to poor people without any collateral. This economic theory is now used extensively throughout developing countries to address poverty.

“I am extremely pleased that Professor Muhammad Yunus has accepted our invitation to be the keynote speaker for the Spring Public Affairs Convocation series,” said Dr. Mahua Barari Mitra, provost fellow for public affairs, chair of the Public Affairs Conference and professor of economics. “It is hard for me to think of any other public figure in recent memory who has been as passionate about eliminating global poverty as Professor Yunus.

“Visionary as he is, Professor Yunus has repeatedly come up with innovative ideas, primarily by pioneering the micro-finance revolution, to create a poverty-free world. He is a real world hero who exemplifies our public affairs mission to the fullest. In the wake of the current financial crisis, let us hope that Professor Yunus’ vision will inspire a new generation of social entrepreneurs who will make this planet a better place for all.”

Grameen Bank has reversed conventional banking practice by removing the need for collateral and created a banking system based on mutual trust, accountability, participation and creativity, according to the bank’s website. The bank uses credit as a weapon to fight poverty and it serves as a catalyst in the overall development of socio-economic conditions of the poor.

As of last December, Grameen reports that it has 7.97 million borrowers, 97 percent of whom are women. With 2,562 branches, the bank provides services in 83,458 villages, covering all villages in Bangladesh.

“Professor Yunus’s experience with economics, finance, international affairs, entrepreneurship and human rights issues are a wonderful fit for this year’s theme, ‘Evolving Economic Realities,’” said Mary Ann Wood, director of public affairs support. “He also embodies the university’s public affairs mission.”

Admission to the lecture is free, but requires a ticket.

* Tickets are available to MSU students, faculty and staff Feb. 8 and 9. Tickets will be available to the public starting Feb. 10.

* Tickets must be picked up in advance as there will not be a Will Call window open for this event.

* Tickets are available at Missouri State Tix outlets: JQH Arena, Hammons Hall for the Performing Arts and the Plaster Student Union ticket office.

* Tickets may be ordered through the ticket office by calling (417) 836-7678, but a $5 shipping and handling fee will apply.

Mrs. Rezina Ahmed (Prof Arif Ahmed's mother) passed away today evening at KU Medical Center (Inna Lillahi wa Inna ileyhi Raj'oon).

Her Namaz-e-Janaza will be held after Zuhr prayer tomorrow (1:30 p.m. on Monday, February 1, 2010) at the Islamic Society of Greater Kansas City (ISGKC) Mosque (8501 E 99th St, Kansas City, MO 64134). Traditional Islamic burial will take place after janaza.

Dear Friends, Families, ladies and gents, Assalamu alikum and Good Afternoon. Before I speak I like to convey the belated Eid Muburak to all of you and I like to thanks the leaderships of Bangladeshi Association of Greater Kansas City for organizing this post Eid Celebrations. Especially I like to thanks all of my Bangladeshi community brothers and sisters for attending and joining to this beautiful community re-union. I like to thanks Rehan Reza the President of BAGKC, Nabil Ahamed the Executive Secretary, I believe he is out of Country, Dr. Mustafa Kamal the Treasurer, Ahamed Anisur Rahman the executive member, the current all other officers and those who have already served in the BAGKC in the past years.

It is an honor and privileges, to be here, standing and speaking before you. Many of you might know me, My name is MD Rabbi Alam and I am a candidate for a Public Office in the great state of Missouri. I am Running for the Missouri General Assembly as a House of Representative for the Missouri House District 50 in the US Election of 2010. My Primary Election will be on August 4th of 2010 and I would like to encourage all of you to get involve and help me and all of our other candidates in the manner of financially, Morally and Ethically.

I would like to take few of your valuable moments and really appreciate for listening, I like to convey some of the messages which is very important to us as immigrants and Naturalized Citizens. If you look at the history of USA, a great nation on Earth surface, having a combination of 300 Some Plus ethnicity, and diversity, which makes this country beautiful, and diversely Rich. As a Naturalized Citizen I am proud to be an American and at the same time I am also proud to be a Bangladeshi. I believe on Identity, and we should not be confused on our Identity. Look at our President Barack Obama, having a father from Keney and a mother who is a typical white lady from Kansas, spend his childhood in a Muslim country Indonesia and brought back and raised in a conservative white grandparent’s family. We have witnessed and seen the changing and the transitional moment in the US Election history of 2008. By saying that, I mean, It was a momentum for us as immigrants to be actively involve and be part of the political process. If you take a moment and look around you, you will see how much we have been a positive force to the main stream communities, economic development and our contribution is not as little as our actively political involvement. We have a great number of Physicians, Professors, Lawyer, Professionals, and small business owners. Everyday, we are indirectly helping our community to be reached at a point where we are no more a second class citizens. Right now, there are many opportunities we have that we should grab and utilize otherwise we will be the sufferers. Who does not remember the post 9-11 hardship? Who does not remember the 2003 Iraqi war? After the catastrophic war against terror is nothing but a horror suffering for us. Whatever hardship we have faced, we do not want our next future generation to face the same hardship and disturbance. Who does not know about Dr. Erian from Florida a University Professor, falsely accused and victimized by war on Terror? If Dr. Erian was involved in politics and had any great linkage with any political participation he would not face that unjust hardship still spending his time Jail in Washington D.C. This is just a current example. I am not making you scared but it is true that, this is a country when you are not involve in the Main Stream you will be treated as nothing but strangers. It is as simple as it is. Who does not know that “You are not innocent, until you are proven not Guilty or Vise verse”.

Why not we come together and create a solid pitch and platform for our future generation who will not have to suffer like us and will have a better chance and opportunity to be part of the main Stream Communities. My Dear brothers, sisters and friends we need to awake up, let us work together and you need to know that, we already proved that we are already well accepted in the Main Stream Political Process in few states. I like to thanks Rehan Reza and Rabiul Karim Belal from Kansas, Kawser Jamil and Tanvir Ahamed from Arkansas, Minhazur Rahman and Dr. Jallal Uddin from Alabama, Meher Alam Mayna and Dr. Safiqur Rahman from Illinois, Dr. Nurul Huda and Jamsedur Rahman from Tennessee, Anwar Kabir Khan and Dr. Abdul Gaffor Akram from Missouri. These Leaders already have taken steps to establish active political involvement and process for our betterment of our children and our next generations. All of these Leaders have seen the opportunity and hope for all of us. Always Remember, A great Idea without any plan is a Dream only, since we have great Ideas, we need great planning and we have to call for action. We have to vote for ourselves. As president Obama said, Hope over Fear, we have to be positive and we need Transformative Intellectuality for a change towards our Immigrants Community by transforming ourselves.

President Abraham Lincoln, said, we deserve to have Life, Liberty and Pursuit to happiness. It will truly never come to us until we understand the schema of the process of gaining pro-political strategies. In 1968 as Dr. Martin Luther King said, “I have a Dream”, Now it is our dream to be a class one citizens. At this point, We can not Remain on the sidelines. Others will come to you and seek your financial support and ask for your vote during the election season. They are hardly available to assist in any matter that can help us as a community or an individual basis. When you vote for Rehan Reza and MD Alam you know that they will come back to you after they are elected and ask you “What Can I Do For You?”. These people will understand what you need and why you are asking for it. And that is Guaranteed. We can never have this or ever expect this from others. So please support our candidates and support yourselves.

Dear All,

It wont be long before the kids go back to school and thoughts turn to the beginning of Ramadan, so dont forget our Annual Picnic on July 26th. It will be at the Gage Shelter near the zoo, same as last year from 9 to 4. Admission is free.

Halal Hotdogs, Hamburgers, chicken as well as the paper products will be provided. Please bring a side dish to share.

Independence Day and Bengali New Year Celebration

We are having a cultural program on the occasion which will includes dances, songs and poem recitations by children and adult artists. We will have a drawing competition for children aged 4-12 where the theme will be drawings around 21st February. We plan to have prizes for the kids. Please encourage your kids to participate - they need to bring their own art paper and crayons.. We have already recieved commitment for a significant number of food, cloth and book stalls - if anyone is still interested please let us know about booking a stall.
